Several areas across the nation are suffering from a shortage of Clorox wipes and hand sanitizer because of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Just how is this shortage affecting the Wiregrass?

After talking to multiple drug stores and seeing multiple social media posts, it's safe to say the amount of sanitizer and disinfectant wipes is dwindling.

"We are completely stocked up on hand sanitizer and Clorox wipes all year long and we are almost out and we go to the store and we cannot find any anywhere. I've checked almost every store in Enterprise, Daleville, Dothan area."

Melissa Willet's daughter Alexis has cerebral palsy which results in respiratory problems and a weak immune system making her more susceptible to the common cold or flu.

"I had a back stock but we've completely gone through our back stock through the shortage because everybody's worried about the coronavirus that they're stocking up and buying everything they see and that leads to those that need it for everyday use without any supplies."

The stores have put in their orders for the supplies, but the wholesale distributors have yet to deliver.

"Right now they're putting unavailable,” Owner and Pharmacist of Northcutt Drugs Glenn Northcutt said. “They don't know when – they can't tell me when they're going to have it."

Glenn Northcutt even says it's more than just the local customers.

"A lot of people that are coming in here or not only looking for themselves, but they are looking for their children who live in other communities," Northcutt added.

Luckily for Melissa, she has some help.

"I have some friends locally that did have a little stockpile that have been helping, but I have friends and family from all other parts of the country sending us stuff so we don't go without,” Melissa said. “We just want to be able to use our sanitizer and clean everything like normal to try and lower our chances."

Stores are not sure how long it will take to get wipes and sanitizer back in stock.
