Salvation Army kettles will feature way to give digitally

DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) -- It’s a problem many of us run into today... We see a cause we’d like to help out, but we don’t have any cash on us! The Salvation Army has come up with a way to fix that this holiday season.

This year, the organization’s red kettles placed at various grocery stores and shopping malls to collect money for those less fortunate will feature a new digital payment method.

New this year, givers can text and make a donation when they see a red kettle.

Lieutenant Tessa Sturdivant with Dothan's Salvation Army chapter says people can text "KETTLE" to 44321 and make a donation that will go to the Wiregrass chapter.

The Wiregrass Salvation Army Kettle Kickoff will be November 14 at 5:30 pm at Wiregrass Commons Mall. Lt. Sturdivant says the Wiregrass area kettle drive will start the same day.

According to the Salvation Army, the iconic kettle drive began in 1891 in San Francisco.
