UPDATE: PAWS for a Cause releases total raised

By  |

Paws for a Cause raised $20,316 to go toward a new Animal Shelter. Shout out to everyone who participated and especially the volunteers and local rescue workers who prepared these puppies for adoption.

Dothan police investigator Erik Broten will never forget the first time he saw the dozens of dogs part of a puppy mill in Dothan.

"We weren't leaving the scene until we rescued them - as long as it took," said Broten.

Earlier this year, Broten helped rescue these 60 dogs from an illegal puppy mill housed at a Dothan home. Six months later - the dogs were put up for adoption at a fundraiser called PAWS for a Cause. It was held at the Dothan Civic Center Thursday night.

"It makes me happy to see everyone come and pet the animals and show them attention and hopefully they go to a good home," said Broten.

The puppies became celebrities overnight in the hearts of people all over the country. From the playful, to the lazy, to the nosey, every dog was on his or her best behavior.

"They are all very friendly," said Cathy Solis, a PAWS for a Cause Volunteer. "Some are a little shy. This one I'm holding is in love with everybody."

Hundreds showed up to bid on their favorite pup. All money raised goes to a great cause.

"We're going to take all the proceeds from the adoption and we're going to put them in the Dothan Police Foundation and that money is going to be earmarked for a new animal shelter so we're very excited about that initiative," said Dothan Police Chief Steve Parrish.

Also excited, the rescued dogs, who now have forever homes.

Every dog adopted at the PAWS for a Cause event was spayed, neutered and micro-chipped by the City of Dothan Animal Shelter.
