DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) - Fake 911 calls are being placed in Dothan, putting law enforcement and homeowners in dangerous situations.
It’s known as swatting.
Individuals place prank calls to emergency services in order to send a large number of armed police officers to a particular address.
An incident like this happened Tuesday morning in Dothan, when the sheriff’s department received a call of a burglary in progress and five individuals with machine guns had a woman locked in a bathroom.
When deputies arrived there was no such thing, and the woman believes her address was obtained through a loan she previously applied for.
Hours later the same number called her work place saying the same thing, prompting deputies to search the workplace as well.
Sheriff Donald Valenza says, "Be patient with us, we get these calls they're scams, and understand when we're coming, we're coming because of a 911 call."
An incident involving swatting in Kansas resulted in a home owner being shot and killed by law enforcement.
The home owner was not committing a crime.
