WASHINGTON COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - A new year, a new scam warning.
Washington County Sheriff Kevin Crews wants to warn people about a phone scam happening in the area. He says people are posing as workers from the Social Security Administration.
Sheriff Crews says the phone numbers are "spoofed" and appear on caller ID as the Social Security Administration. The scammers impersonate SSA employees and claim there is an issue or discrepancy with the account or they need to verify information.
Sheriff Crews says during these calls, scammers have threatened prosecution or arrest if they don't get the information.
“If you are contacted by a person who threatens you with legal action or arrest, in order to obtain information, the call is fraudulent,” Sheriff Crews said. “Do not give them your social security number or banking information. Hang up the phone immediately.”
If a person calls you claiming to be an employee of SSA and you have reason to doubt this claim, Sheriff Crews says hang up the phone and call the SSA directly.
