Numbers are in for Dothan homeless count
The Southeast Alabama Coalition for the Homeless complete the count each year to see the trends in homelessness in Dothan.
Several Wiregrass ministries and organizations collaborated for two hours the last Saturday in January and within the 13 tent cities visited in Dothan there was a total number of 83 homeless people.
That number reflects 15-20% of the homeless population, nonprofits believe there are around 600 homeless people in Dothan.
The count is done with the ultimate goal of helping people transition out of homelessness.
"We want to know we are making a difference so doing it every year, we want to see those number continue to decline not just maybe a homeless individual has moved on. But we want to see the results of getting people out of homelessness and into sustainable lifestyles right here in the Wiregrass," Kody Kirchhoff, executive director of Harbor said.
The Harbor, Love in Action, Rescue Mission, Living Hope and The Ark are some of the few organizations involved in the homeless count.
