New regulations impacting how you travel

DOTHAN, Al. (WTVY) Heading out for the holidays?

This might be the last year you can fly to another US city without a passport or license. You have to get a licence with a DHS seal.

The idea came about in 2005, it’s called Real ID.

Dothan airport director Art Morris tells us it's a way to develop an ID standard.

It was supposed to start 3 years ago.

He says,
"Then it got delayed to 2015, then 2016, then 2017, now here we are with 2018 and TSA is saying, no more extensions."

After 9/11, it was thought that this would be the best way to keep people from duplicating licenses.

"In a lot of states, you just walk in and get a license, you might pass the driver’s test but you don't have to have a background check."

Some states have been given an extension until 2020, Alabama isn't one of them.

To get one of these new licenses, you'll need to show a valid passport, birth certificate or a bill that has proof of residence.

We should know if this plan will go in effect by the end of next month. If it happens, it will go into action January 22, 2018.
