New free app protects Alabamians from tax fraud

DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) The last day to file taxes is Tuesday, April 18th in Alabama and there's a new way to help avoid tax fraud – the MorphoTax eID app. MorphoTax eID is a free app that you can download on your mobile device. It stops criminals from filing taxes using your personal information.

To register, start by downloading the app to your iPhone or iPad from the app store. Afterwards, follow the prompts which include security questions. You then take a selfie on your phone, which uses face recognition off your license. Final step is heading on over to a computer and using your device to scan a QR code off the desktop screen.

"We also won't have to put a tax return through all the other numerous verification procedures that we had to employ because of d theft,” said Julie Magee, Alabama Tax Revenue Commissioner. “So your return will be processed faster than any other return we get if you register for this program."

You just need to download MorphoTax eID once. You don’t have to worry about filling out the information again.

The app is one of a kind. This is the first time in IRS history that something like this has been created, and Alabama is the first state to implicate it. Magee mentioned that the next state to start this will be Georgia.

MorphoTax eID is currently only available on apple devices, (iPhones and iPads), sorry android and window users! However Magee did say an android app is under construction and will be released in the future.
