DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) - Briefings and paperwork were a big portion of the day for Dothan’s new city manager. Monday was Kevin Cowper’s first day on the job.
Cowper said he's still getting used to the community and finding out all of what Dothan has to offer.
He spent the last 11 years as the assistant city manager in Auburn after 7 years in Pensacola, and thinks experience working with a bigger city and handling its operations will transfer well.
Most of his first day he spent talking with city commission members and department heads to see what they are looking for out of the city manager.
He said the city has a lot of potential, and thinks the growing downtown and nice neighborhoods are key building blocks to develop the city around.
Once he's used to the new gig, he hopes to make some recommendations on some issues he's seen with transportation, drainage and sewage.
"I'll spend the next several months just really trying to learn,” said Cowper. “Learn about the community and reading, catching up on strategic plans and budgets, really just getting my arms around all of the city operations."
The city is hosting a meet-and-greet with Cowper Tuesday, and welcomes anyone with ideas or questions to come out and talk to him.
It will start at 5 pm in the 2nd floor board room of the Dothan Civic Center.
