Need help and don't know where to go? Call Wiregrass 2-1-1.

DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) -- February 11th may be just a normal day to some but to the community of Dothan, it's National 2-1-1 Day.

"Why is 2-1-1 important, what do they do?" Executive Director of Wiregrass 2-1-1, David Duke asked.

For 12 years, the Wiregrass 2-1-1 program has been collaborating, informing and connecting the Wiregrass to build a stronger community.

"It's a free program that brings people and services together. We all know people that need help and a lot of the times they don't know where to go, or where to start. Or you know maybe wanting to give back to you community but how do you go about that?" David Duke said.

And it all starts with picking up the phone and dialing 2-1-1.

"2-1-1 is the first place to call for people to start regaining stability in their life, we're that first contact there that thy can reach out to and we can give them hope through programs in our community that truly care," Duke said.

170,267 calls have been answered and almost 302,484 referrals for those calls were provided to programs right here in our community.

"We're not here to solve their problems, we're here to provide the resources for them to take control of their lives. So we just get to walk along with them as they're working through whatever issues they have at the time," Paul Murphey, volunteer call specialist with Wiregrass 2-1-1 said.

Whether it's financial, domestic, health, or disaster-related, 2-1-1 can provide you services 24/7.

"It's extremely gratifying, that people call and were able to provide them resources which they can contact. It can make a tremendous difference in their lives," Murphey said.

Wiregrass 2-1-1 is providing a connection to those who need it most -- "We're there to make that connection, we don't provide the services ourselves but were so fortunate to work with over 900 different agencies and programs," Duke said.

"I like to think that's what we really do well here. When you call 2-1-1, you're not getting a robot, you're not getting an automated recording, you're getting a live human being who has experienced much of what they have experienced but in different ways," Murphey said.

Wiregrass 2-1-1 is a local program supported by the community - and today they could say thank you to everyone that has helped them.
