National Adoption Weekend kicks off at PetSmart

DOTHAN, Ala (WTVY) - National Adoption Weekend kicked off Friday afternoon at PetSmart in Dothan. The Wiregrass Humane Society will bring cats and dogs there from 11 A.M. to 3 P.M. Saturday and Sunday.

Whether you're a cat fan or looking for "man's best friend,” there's a pet for you.

"If they come out to PetSmart, and see one animal that stands out to them and pulls on their heartstrings, we'll allow them to take them for a walk whether it be around the store or out back, let them spend some time with them,” says Blake Bedsole, shelter manager at the Wiregrass Humane Society. "We have enough animals in this world now that need homes instead of being here in cages or kennels for us to care for every day."

All animals at PetSmart will come microchipped and be up to date on all their shots. The adoption fee for dogs is $150, while it ranges from $95 to $125 for cats. The fees include 30 days of free pet insurance, and a free vet exam. But if you're hesitant to take on a new member of the family— the Wiregrass Humane Society says that's perfectly normal.

"We always want you to be certain that you are ready to adopt,” says Bedsole. “So if you are on the fence, that's fine! Come out here and see everyone we have to offer. By all means, we want you to be fully prepared to take this pet home and give it the loving home it deserves."

And if you worry about your new pet adjusting to its new life— don't worry. Growing pains are par for the course in a new home.

"We have in our adoption application that you are willing to give the animal at least two months to adjust to its new home,” says Bedsole. “So it's going to go from a kennel and limited space to a loving family, their own bed, their own food and water."

Bedsole says the main goal of this weekend is simple:

"Adopting is giving that animal a second chance at life."
