Mexico Beach City Council passes ordinance to help residents rebuild homes

MEXICO BEACH, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - Mexico Beach city leaders approved an ordinance during its council meeting Tuesday to help residents rebuild their homes.

Mayor Al Cathey said the ordinance temporarily waives setbacks for property owners and allows storm victims who lost their homes during Hurricane Michael to rebuild their primary existing structure on the footprint they had before the hurricane.

Cathey also spoke about how the upgrade of Hurricane Michael to a category 5 storm would affect the city.

"At this point, it's just a number. It doesn't do anything for us. Other than history will show that we are having to rebuild from a category 5 storm," said Cathey.

Mayor Cathey said if anything, he hopes the ranking will help Governor Ron DeSantis influence President Trump to provide more federal aid to the city.
