PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - Memorial Day Weekend will soon be upon us and Panama City Beach officials have high expectations for the number of people who will be here.

"I think we've increased every year and I don't see that changing," said Panama City Beach Mayor Mike Thomas.

"What we've been hearing from our lodging partners is that there's a lot of short-term reservations," said Executive Director of the Bay County Tourist Development Council, Dan Rowe.

They said they're excited for what Memorial Day means for the area.

"We think that this weekend will be a great start for our summer season," emphasized Rowe.

And said they are ready for any issues that could be thrown their way.

"It's always a traffic, trash, and noise problem, but if you don't have those three you're not doing business," said Mayor Thomas.

As people travel to and from our beaches, it's important to always be safe.

Chris Coppick, Store Manager at Discount Tire, said, "When you go to do a long trip, there's one thing that keeps you attached to the road, only one, and it's the shoes of your car, make sure you don't have a nail in your tire, make sure that the air pressure is correct."

But most important of all is remembering why we celebrate Memorial Day.

"It's the sacrifice that the men and women who have served in the armed forces have made to keep us free," said Rowe.

Officials said while traffic and crowds are anticipated for the weekend, they want locals to enjoy the sun and be excited for what is happening in our area.
