JACKSON COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - A Jackson County woman is facing charges after deputies say she hit and threw coffee at two people because of their race.

Last week, the Jackson County Sheriff's Office was called to respond to a physical disturbance at the Handi Mart on Highway 71 North.

Deputies say based on witness statements and in store video, Darla Layton, 57, started the fight. They say she made racial statements and hit the victims. Deputies say Layton also threw coffee on the victims before leaving the scene. She was gone by the time deputies arrived.

An arrest warrant was served Tuesday morning. Layton was arrested at her home. She's charged with battery (intentionally selected victims because of perception or knowledge of race), a 3rd degree felony.
