TAYLOR, Ala. (WTVY) Disc golf is a quickly-growing sport across the nation, and the Wiregrass is home to a handful of courses--including one just to the southwest of Dothan in Taylor.
Tournament assistant director Eli Whitehurst putts at the 2nd hole at Taylor Disc Golf Course.
Disc golf is a normally free-to-play alternative to regular golf. Instead of hitting a golf ball with various clubs, disc golf uses various types of flying discs. While most regular golf courses require you to pay before playing a round, most disc golf courses are on state and municipal parks--normally eliminating the need to pay before playing.
Disc golf is a beginner-friendly sport. Most people have already thrown a frisbee during their lives, and throwing a disc for disk golf isn't too much different.
It's easy to get started playing disc golf. Sporting goods stores sell disc golf starter sets for around $20. These sets include a driver, mid-range, and putter discs.
if you're looking to get started with disc golf, the inaugural Ice Bowl Disc Golf Tournament in Taylor could be a perfect place.
Ice Bowl tournaments started in the midwest. They usually take place between December and February, where most pro disc golfers are in their offseason. The normally colder temperatures give the tournament it's name.
The one stipulation to the Ice Bowl tournament is it needs to be associated with a charity. Eli Whitehurst and other directors of the tournament has chosen the Wiregrass Area Food Bank.
All proceeds from the tournament will go toward the Wiregrass Area Food Bank, where every dollar raised will provide nine meals.
