Hurricane Camille made landfall on this day in 1969

(CBS News) -- On this day in history, August 17, 1969, Hurricane Camille took the lives of 248 people.

The storm formed a few days earlier and rapidly intensified. It strengthed over the Gulf of Mexico and flattened along the state of Mississippi.

In total, Camille caused $1.42 billion in damage.
