Houston Co. Schools provide lunches to children

Rehobeth high school handing out meals to children

REHOBETH, Ala. (WTVY) -- Students all across the country don't know where their next meal will come from as they depend on lunch provided by their schools.

Houston County Schools wants to ensure their students don’t miss much needed meals while school is out due to the Coronavirus.

Faculty from the school system are hopping on buses and bringing food to students in their neighborhoods.

Rehobeth high school child nutrition Manager, Melissa Rice said “we are out trying to reach as many children as possible that may be in need of nutrition during the time that we’re out of school.”

As a child nutrition Manager, Melissa knows how important these meals are to the children who receive them.

“We realize that a lot of these children depend on the meals that they get at school every day. So we want to just provide that to the children during this time,” Rice said.

These meals provide comfort for families who need it most.

“This is a hardship for a lot of people at this time and we just want to help as many children out there as we can,” Rice said.

For families like the Hall’s, these meals couldn’t come at a better time.

“Having to stay out of work due to my children being sick, it gets kind of hard. So everything that everybody is willing to do for my children is a blessing from above,” the family’s mother said.

The Family’s father said if the schools weren’t providing meals “we’d have to just go through our alternatives and talk to our family and see if they could help and if not we’d just have to survive the best way we know how. And they’d have to eat what we have at home.”

Sometimes what’s at home isn’t always enough.

“I’m very thankful for the people I live around because if I ever need something they’re there,” Ms. Hall said.

Knowing that children won’t be going hungry during this time warms the heart of Melissa and the entire Houston County School system.

“It is absolutely wonderful. And we’ve already had a couple of stops today that brought tears to our eyes. So we are just happy to do it,” Rice concluded.

Houston County Schools will be providing meals to students again on Thursday, March 26th from 11am to 1pm.
