DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) -- Monday is Veterans Day, and many area schools took part in celebrating the occasion.
“We don’t know them all, but we owe them all.”
Those are sentiments shared by students at Houston Academy Thursday morning during their Veterans Day celebration.
Teachers and students have been discussing Veterans Day and its meaning in their classes.
Students were tasked with writing poems and essays about the holiday, as well as those who fight to protect our freedom.
Several of the essays were chosen to be read aloud during Thursday morning’s assembly, while fellow classmates, teachers, and veterans from the Wiregrass area looked on from the audience.
Many of the essays had personal significance.
“For me, it’s really a time for me to think about my family; why they all choose to do what they with their lives," said 9th Grader, Mia Telesco.
"It’s really just a day for me to be really proud of them,” Telesco said.
“We just thought it was important to let the students know how important our veterans are and to emphasize honoring them,” said 4th Grade Teacher, Laurie Gilmore.
Also included in Thursday's celebration, was a parade of flags.
The school’s band played patriotic music, while students carried flags representing each branch of the military.
