Heavy police presence at Emmanuel Christian but no emergency

DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) -- There was a heavy first responder presence at one Wiregrass school Friday morning.

There was no emergency just students and staff eager to say thank you to their local heroes.

Emmanuel Christian School held its First Responders Appreciation Day.

Police officers, deputies, firemen, and other first responders talked with students and showed them equipment used in emergencies.

The event started as a law enforcement officer appreciation day but last year it was expanded to include first responders from multiple counties even dispatchers and four-legged helpers.

"The kids could interact with those things and learn about how that's learned in everyday life to keep us safe and then we wanted to show the kids that they are indeed our friends. We're not scared of them," says event organizer Amanda Gurman.

The school provided lunch for 300 first responders.

This is the fourth year the event has been held.
