Harbor Church opens its doors in the bitter cold

DOTHAN, AL (WTVY) Warming centers are open across the Wiregrass tonight as the freezing temperatures continue to grip the area.

Volunteers have been coming in and out of Harbor Church all day to make sure they have enough supplies to shelter nearly 60 people as the temperatures continue to plummet.

Joel Williams is the director of the harbor church and with the help of a dozen volunteers, is giving the less fortunate of a chance to get out of the bitter cold.

He says "It's not safe to be exposed. And there's a fairly large population in the city that don't have sufficient housing or a safe place to stay when temperatures get this low."

Volunteer Velda Oliver says that while it's uncommon to have the bitter cold in the south, harbor church is doing the right thing.

She said "You see this more in the North than you do down here in the South, but it's a good thing that the harbor has their doors open, to have a warming shelter for people to come and spend a night away from the cold."

As the cold continues to grip the Wiregrass, organizations like the Harbor Church still need help they can get no matter how big.

Williams said "Anything like blankets, pillows, any type of warm winter wear like thick socks or long jons anything that while people are out in the street and don't have place to go, they can be warm."

The City of Dothan is working to make sure that a warming center is up and running for the rest of the week.

The centers still need any type of donations possible, whether it's food, water, or warm clothes.
