DOTHAN, Al. (WTVY) -- The Houston County Sheriff's Office gave out some special awards this morning at the county commission meeting.

HCSO gives out life-saving awards to deputies

Sheriff Donald Valenza recognized several of his deputies for their life-saving actions.

Known as a "life threatening-life saving award,” the sheriff's deputies take action to keep people alive until paramedics arrive on the scene.

Sheriff Valenza says he couldn't ask for a better group of deputies.

β€œIt does take special people to do that. A lot of people don't look at it that way. I've been with the department 41 years. I am so proud of these deputies we have now.”

Sheriff Valenza says there's no way to know when the next award ceremony will take place.

He says as much as he enjoys honoring deputies, he doesn't look forward to getting those calls and hopes he doesn't have to.
