Wiregrass helps community with Giving Tuesday

DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) -- Christmas season is upon us. This also means it's the perfect time for giving and December 3rd is the day to do it.

Giving Tuesday shifts the holiday season from a time to buy, to a time to share. It's a yearly movement urging you to give a little of what you have to help someone else (SOURCE: KOLN).

Giving Tuesday started almost 20 years ago - it follows Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday.

It's a day to give back to those less fortunate. Many organizations around the Wiregrass are taking part.

Wiregrass United Way started Giving Tuesday 5 years ago - and in 2019 they hope to raise 2% of their overall goal - $58,888.88.

By the end of the day today they hope to just get people informed on the day.

"It really spotlights the need for charitable contributions, the non-profit organizations in southeast Alabama make a tremendous impact literally every day of the year," said Wiregrass United Way CEO, Walter Hill. "Whether it's domestic violence, hunger, homelessness, child abuse, there are so many needs in our communities and the nonprofits are the ones who reach them."

At last report, the Wiregrass United Way has currently made $132,654.88 from Giving Tuesday.
