Geneva County new jail ahead of schedule
The new jail in Geneva County is currently in the process of being built and the sheriff tells me this will be beneficial not just for the jail but for the county as a whole.
After being behind schedule by almost 42 days the new Geneva County jail is now ahead of schedule.
That’s thanks to the dryer weather according to Geneva County Sheriff Tony Helms.
Jail pods have are already fully equipped and in place.
Work is now being done on the visitation area.
The next step is picking out the different color schemes that will be used inside.
"So you know there are still a lot of little bitty stuff to get done, but they are moving along with it fairly well at a good pace." Sheriff Helms said.
Geneva County’s current jail, built in 1963, was designed to hold just 42 inmates.
The new jail can hold three times that amount, something Sheriff Helms says is needed.
"And as we all say this, 'build it and they will come,' we're not running out of inmates. If anything with the crime is increasing." Helms says.
Another reason for needing a new jail, "That jail was built... it was not ADA compatible. The new jail will be. It'll be safer, it'll be easier to maintain, and it'll be more modern and up to date."
Another benefit for having a new jail – jobs. As the new jail will be in need of more staff.
The sheriff says with the pace they are working at now, the jail will be scheduled to finish later this year.
Voters approved a one-cent sales tax to help fund a new jail in 2014.
The project will cost about $9-million dollars once completed.
