He graduated top of his class at Harvard but left his law profession behind to become an author.
Jonathan Putnam came to Alabama for a lunch and learn with Friends of the Dothan Houston County Library System.
His new book, Final Resting Place, is the third in his Lincoln and Speed Mystery Series.
The books highlight the friendship between a struggling young Abraham Lincoln and Joshua Speed, a wealthy businessman.
He says speaking to people who love libraries is especially meaningful.
"First of all, I had two part time jobs when I was a teenager in libraries," said Jonathon Putnam. "Second of all, I wrote all of my books in libraries. I've had a study at home but just loved the idea of libraries. So I physically wrote out all of my books. Three have been published. I'm working on the fourth. All of them have been written in libraries."
The book series is inspired by real events in the lives of Abraham Lincoln and Speed which Putnam then says he "re-imagines them as a Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson type of characters".
