Animal rescue needs help recovering from Eufaula tornado

EUFAULA, AL. (WTVY) - Anna Shepard was in Ft. Gaines when she got a text message saying the Eufaula airport was gone.

Anna Shepard, Director at Southern Souls Animal League, says "I got in my truck and started coming. I knew if the airport was gone...the shelter's destroyed."

Shepard says she had no idea what to expect upon pulling up.

"I got here and my gate was lying flipped upside down...and I just lost it because all I'm thinking about is my poor dogs," said Shepard.

Shepard says another volunteer arrived before she did.

"She called and she was crying but she said everyone was alive. I said, "That’s great, but why are you crying?" replied Shepard.

Laura Taylor, Volunteer at Southern Souls Animal League, says "Honestly, I kind of had a break down at first because it was a disaster. All of the kennels were pushed up against one another and we couldn't get the dogs out because of the way our doors open."

It's been two days since the tornado made its way through Eufaula and Shepard tells me the road to recovery is just beginning.

"We need volunteers. We need a lot of strong men. Obviously, y'all can see there's a lot of damage as far to the fence and to the kennels," replied Shepard.

"We've got to get our fences up because we can't let our dogs run around if our fences are vulnerable. We can't have them running out into the highway," said Taylor.

"Southern Souls has always gone and helped...when the tornadoes hit Albany, we went and pulled 30 dogs. The thing is when people are displaced...their pets are displaced,” said Shepard.

Southern Souls is asking for monetary donations as well…you can donate through their amazon wish list or go fund me page from the links below.
