Dothan (WTVY)-- A band director at Girard Middle School in Dothan was arrested for engaging in sexually explicit conversations with a student.

Dothan police, in a statement, said Phillip Edward Erin Burns is charged with School Employee Soliciting a Sex Act with a Student under the Age of 19 Years, a misdemeanor.

Burns, who police say also works at Northview High School, allegedly engaged in conversations using a social media messaging app. Police don’t reveal where the student, whose age wasn’t released, attends school.

In a recent unrelated case, School Resource Officer Adrian Folmar was arrested for having sex with two students while working at Dothan High School.

In 2014 another DHS resource officer, Lanice Bonds, was convicted for violating the School Employee Sex Law. He received parole in February after serving less than four years of a ten-year prison sentence.

The School Sex Law last year was declared unconstitutional by a North Alabama Circuit Judge. The state is appealing.

Burns is on administrative leave following Friday’s arrest.
