Dothan city commissioners approve $5k for new downtown mural

DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) -- There are nearly two dozen murals around Downtown Dothan, and soon the city will be adding another.

On Tuesday morning, Dothan city commissioners approved $5,000 for the Murals of the Wiregrass.

The money will help fund the task of prepping and installing a mural on the east wall of the building located at 123 East Main Street.

The new mural will be part of an ongoing project of historic murals, painted by nationally and internationally acclaimed artists.

Right now, the wall is a bit of an eyesore.

That’s why one board member from Murals of the Wiregrass said it’s time for a facelift.

“People are visiting Dothan because they are here for family; they’re coming down for a conference, or for a sports event and we need to have cultural things for them to do while they’re here in this area,” said Mike Riddle.

“And the murals are a big part of that attraction,“ Riddle said.

Riddle added the mural will most likely depict sports in the area, including some famous athletes from the Wiregrass.

He said the $5,000 from the Dothan commission is seed money, and the final cost of the mural will depend on the work that is needed on the wall itself, the size and scope of the project and how much the artist will charge to create it.
