Dothan Police take kids on a shopping spree during "Shop with a Cop"
Academy Sports in Dothan was swarming with police Thursday night, but it was all for a good cause.
Dothan Police and Academy Sports teamed up for “Shop with a Cop”.
Jahaziron Bishop and Officer Tyawan Fields spent a chunk of the afternoon shopping for kicks together at Academy Sports.
Jahaziron was one of ten kids from the Wiregrass Boys & Girls Club And Hawk-Houston Youth Enrichment Center that got to participate in “Shop with a Cop”.
"It kind of bridges the gap and shows them that we're not all bad and that we're not business at all times, that we can relax a little bit and have fun,” said Fields.
Each cop was equipped with a $150 gift card that the kids could use for anything their hearts desired.
Jahaziron knew what was on the top of his wish list.
"Jelly beans, some candy, some shoes, a football, a volleyball, a basketball and some more good stuff,” said Bishop.
The partnership between Dothan Police and Academy Sports is meant to bring a little Christmas spirit to the kids.
It may have been about shopping to Jahaziron, but it was about building toward the future for Officer Fields.
"The cool thing about him was he said he actually wants to be a police officer when he got a little older,” said Fields. “I told him, 'I wish we could hire him now. He could start tomorrow.'"
All 15 Academy Sports locations in Alabama will be doing shop with a cop this week.
In total, the program will donate nearly $25,000 to help 150 children in Alabama.
