Dothan Planning Commission aims to re-purpose historic building

DOTHAN -- (WTVY) The Dothan Planning Commission got a look at the proposed project Monday (Oct. 16).
The Old Howell School building on East Newton Street will be converted into low income housing.
The idea has been tossed around for a few years.
But a kink developed last year when tax credits expired.
The legislature reinstated those in may.
If the project is approved construction could begin in early 2018.
Chuck Harris the Chairman for the Dothan Planning Commission said "And this being a long awaited project, that's been going on for I guess close to two years now and so we're ready to see it come to flourish."
The Dothan City Commission earlier allocated $1.5 million toward the $14 million project.
That funding would need to voted on again, something that will happen after January 1st 2018.
As for the planning commission, it is set to vote on the Howell School project Wednesday.
