Dothan, AL (WTVY)-- Andrea Flagg, a convicted murderer released from prison by mistake, is back in custody. Dothan police and federal marshals captured him Wednesday at a Ross Clark Circle hotel.

Flagg, 34, had been on the run since his release last Thursday from Donaldson Correctional Facility in Bessemer. That's when he completed serving a sentence on an unrelated charge.

Prison officials apparently did not realize he should be returned to Dothan for another trial on charges he shot 33-year old James Gillard in 2015. His conviction had been overturned on legal technicalities.

Houston County Circuit Clerk Carla Woodall blames the Alabama Department of Corrections with the error. “We had put a hold on (Flagg) not to be released,”she told WTVY.

ADOC has not responded to a request for comment.

After his capture, Flagg was taken to the Houston County Jail. He is held on a half million dollars bond, awaiting his second murder trial.
