COWARTS, Ala. (WTVY) With spring just around the corner, many in the Wiregrass are getting their gardens ready!
One of the many camellias currently in bloom at Cowarts
The Southeast Alabama Camellia Society gathered to learn more about grafting Camellias.
Max Mckinney, who has been cultivating Camellias for nearly 40 years, led the demonstration, showing how to cut and handle the plants.
McKinney says since some types aren’t carried by nurseries, grafting is the only local way for avid enthusiasts to get certain varieties.
“If you want a new variety that has been registered with American Camellia Society, then you have to get a scion from somebody that has the plant and graft it.”
The Camellia Society’s next event will demonstrate another method of starting Camellia plants. It will be held the 2nd Tuesday of March.
