BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - The excitement was overwhelming in New York, as the victorious US Women Soccer team was welcomed home from their World Cup Victory. Now, a city councilman is working to bring the championship players to Birmingham in Central Alabama.

Birmingham City Councilman William Parker sits on the Park and Recreation Board and is refusing to let Legion Field sit empty of some team or event. The US Women Soccer team is one group he wants to play at the historic field.
The Women Soccer Team will be starting an exhibition tour in August in Pasadena California. Parker says Birmingham has issued an invitation for the women’s team to come to Birmingham for a friendly exhibition game. In 2015 the US Women’s team came to Birmingham for an exhibition match and it was a sellout at Legion Field. Parker expects its going to be the same this time around if the team accepts the invitation.
“We feel like it will sell out at Legion Field. I think the fan base is that strong here. Not only in the city of Birmingham and state of Alabama but across the southeast.” Parker said.
Parker said the switch from Astroturf to natural turf should be in time for an August play date. Work of the field should begin in about two weeks. He hopes to hear from the women’s team soon.
