Panama City local competing in World Oyster Opening Championship

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) -- Honor Allen shucks a lot of oysters.

He's so good at shucking, he is the 2016 National Oyster Shucking Champion. Allen will be headed to the Galway International Oyster and Seafood Festival in Galway, Ireland in September to compete in the World Oyster Opening Championship.

Allen works at Hunt's Oyster Bar in Panama City, Fla. as an oyster shucker where he gets plenty of practice. Allen says the oysters in Ireland are different than the ones he deals with on a daily basis.

"The oysters native to Ireland over there are their own species. Edulis I want to say is how you pronounce it. There are a lot different than what we're used to. The Ireland oysters are very flat. I don't have a whole lot of experience shucking anything of that sort," said Allen.

He said you can get that species of oyster in Maine and he plans on picking some up from Maine to get some practice in. Allen said he just wants to make everyone proud and represent the U.S. well in the World Oyster Opening Championship.
