2-year-old boy dead in Birmingham shooting; family says he found gun, shot self

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AL.com) — A 2-year-old boy died Wednesday morning after family members say he found a gun and accidentally shot himself in the face in north Birmingham’s Collegeville homes.

The shooting happened at 10 a.m. in the 3000 block of 31st Street North shortly after 10 a.m. Angela Jelks Gilliam identified the child as her great-grandson, Ke’Anthony Jelks Jr. Gilliam said the child somehow got hold of the gun and fatally shot himself.

Birmingham North Precinct Capt. James Jackson said they are not yet confirming the boy shot himself. As of right now, the death is unclassified at this time. "We can’t confirm that right now,'' Jackson said. "We’re trying to determine the details of what happened.
