DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) - This Summer is already looking brighter as several seniors from around the Wiregrass are getting to gather at these seniors centers every day once again.

The Rose Hill Seniors Center and the East Geneva County Seniors Center re-opened their doors on a daily basis on Tuesday, after being at least partially closed since March of 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions.

“For the elderly, they truly did become like little islands,” Lorri Everett, East Geneva County Seniors Center Director, said.

The pandemic forced isolation upon many.

“I was speaking to one of our seniors earlier and I asked her, ‘What did you do for the past year and a half,’ and she said, ‘Sit at my house and watch tv,’ and that just broke my heart,” Jyssica Curenton, recreation center manager

Especially these senior citizens.

“You were the one that the statistic said, ‘Your at risk the most,’ and so you’re sitting there, by yourself, taking this in and how scary is that,” Everett said.

With occasional weekly visits from their a family member or friend, or no one at all, since March of 2020.

“It has been very very very hard on senior adults, just the ones that I know personally, to deal with that isolation and really kind of battling a depression of being alone,” Everett said.

Linda Burke has been coming to the rose hill senior center everyday for eight years.

“The socialization is what I really needed and it was like a lifeline for me,” Burke said.

On Tuesday, she got her “lifeline” back.

“It’s amazing to be able to see them happy again, to get them out of their houses,” Curenton said.

The journey of getting back on schedule for the seniors in Dothan and East Geneva County begins.

Both centers have increased their sanitation efforts as they welcome these seniors back.

The East Geneva County Seniors Center is cutting their hours back just for time being as they get back into the process of re-opening. They will be closing at 12 p.m. each day.
