DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) -A Dothan man is charged with bilking his mother-in-law out of $203,000, an amount that could increase as police continue their investigation.

44-year-old John D. Moore faces 15 Financial Exploitation of the Elderly counts with additional charges possible, said Dothan Police Sergeant Tim Mullis.

He said an investigation revealed Moore bought numerous items, including a car.

He declined to identify the victim, who he said had given power of attorney to a family member, who Mullis also did not identify.

Officers spent several hours seizing evidence after executing a search warrant at Moore’s home on Tuesday.

“This is a very detailed investigation and will take time to complete,” he told News 4.

Court records show Moore married a Dothan woman, who has a mother in her 80′s, on April 22.

However, by May 11, she had filed for divorce, claiming Moore had drained her bank accounts, maxed out her credit cards, and moved a new lover into their home.

Moore, held without bail, apparently does not have an attorney who could comment on his behalf.
