Dothan City School’s spotlight Dothan Tech programs in honor of CTE month
DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) -
Seventeen. That’s the number of Career and Technical Education programs Dothan Tech offers.
“For a student trying to figure out what they want to do when they grow up this is a great opportunity for them to be apart of this industry in an educational setting right now. So they can decide this is something I want to further pursue or I found something out about this industry and I think I might want to try a different industry,” Chris Duke, director of CTE and Workforce Development said.
They have just about any and every class that prepares you for your career. For some, enrolling in a program meant fulfilling a life-long dream.
“I was always interested in the medical field since I was a child. We were able to come and visit and I remember looking into the laboratory and seeing the little test tubes bubbling and being able to look into a microscope and seeing the intricate workings of a cell and I immediately fell in love,” Carrie Elaine Smith, senior at Dothan High said.
For others, it meant getting a head-start and following in the footsteps of family.
“I have a bunch of family that’s in construction and I was thinking about going into that career. I knew a little bit about it but when I joined this class we do a lot of book work and hands on work. I learned a lot, various things I didn’t think I would learn and because of Mr. Griggs I’ve been able start working doing construction and know what I’m doing,” Levion Grantham, senior at Dothan High said.
So the month of February is not just dedicated to honoring the courses but the valuable skills you learn from them.
“It’s helpful because I know I can help and I’m confident in my ability to help whether it’s my family member or myself if they’re stuck somewhere and they just cant get to a shop, I know I can be of use to them,” Jamel Harris, senior at Dothan High said.
Dothan City Schools is also posting daily testimonials highlighting the different programs Dothan Tech has to offer in honor of CTE month.
