Undated (WTVY) -Another 2,000 Alabamians will die from COVID in the next 90 days and the toll could climb higher.

That projection comes from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, an often relied on group affiliated with the University of Washington.

IHME projects 9664 people in the state will die from COVID by May 1, an increase of about 1800 from the state’s current death toll.

As of Tuesday, the Alabama Department of Public Health website showed 7894 have died during the pandemic, including about 1800 probable virus-related deaths that await final confirmation.

IHME predicts the death toll will be worse---above 10,000--- if COVID variants already confirmed in the state spread rapidly.

Hospitals and other medical providers look to IHME for guidance.

At times, its figures have been accurate but, in some cases, not as precise.
