ENTERPRISE, Ala. (WTVY) --

One Enterprise High School band member is receiving national recognition for his musical talents.

Iain Riordan is a senior French Horn player at the high school.

“He’s one of the top players to come through here and works really hard,” Enterprise High School Band Director Sean Weiler said.

His hard work is paying off getting the chance to play for the 2021 National Association for Music Education All-National Concert Band.

“He submitted a recording I believe it was last summer or the spring and based off those recordings they collect them from around the country and then they select students based off the recordings,” Weiler added. “He was picked out of all the students for French Horn.”

The ensemble contains 50 to 70 high school musicians from across the country, but only around a dozen will be playing French Horns.

“It’s a great honor for him to be a part of this and hopefully we’ll have more students. It is only the second student from our school to be picked,” Weiler explained. “It kind of just shows he has a true initiative for music and really proud of him.”

It’s an accomplishment that almost never happened.

“I originally didn’t even want to be in the high school band, but once I got done with my eighth-grade year, I got really hooked on it, so I just kept through it,” senior Iain Riordan said.

It took some serious last-minute prepping for his audition.

“I was really preparing for it by the end of the school year but then COVID hit so by the time the audition rolled around I had almost forgotten about it and so it was like two nights before the audition was due and I hadn’t played my horn in about a week,” Iain said.

Out of all Iain’s accomplishments throughout his high school band career, he says the relationships he has made along the way are the greatest.

“It’s really easy to make a lot of friends while doing this because once you get to high school you have a big band of a bunch of people that are interested in the same stuff and its really fun.”

Iain hopes to attend Auburn University in the future, studying composition or technology in the music field and of course, dreams of playing for their band.

The concert will be comprised of recordings that each member of the ensemble will create, but there is yet to be an air date announced.
