Wiregrass disc golfer rising to the top
Caden Wright ranks among the top of players in his division.
DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) - A Wiregrass local is making a name for himself in the disc golf world, after learning how to play the sport by watching Youtube videos.
“It’s just like golf,” Caden Wright said. “Only thing different is there’s no clubs and balls just frisbees.”
Wright started playing disc golf just a little over two years ago.
“I was out throwing a couple of frisbees with my cousins and they were playing disc golf for a little bit and they let me throw a couple of their discs in the yard,” he said. “And I just kind of got hooked.”
The 8th grader has quickly moved to the top of the rankings.
Wright is the second highest rated 13-year-old in the world, and ranks first in Alabama at the Intermediate level.
“I was surprised for one thing because there’s a lot of good people out there, and just whenever I saw that I kind of screamed and flipped out a little bit,” Wright said.
And with not many other young golfers in the state, Wright often has to compete against adults.
He said, “It’s a challenge that I’m ready to accept. Actually, over the couple of months I’ve improved playing with adults, like I’ve gotten used to it and it kind of feels weird playing with juniors.”
And Wright’s success has secured him sponsorships along the way helping with the costly expenses of equipment.
“I’m on team Prodigy Disc and team Flight Factory,” Wright said. “They just picked me up about a year ago and supported me with everything I need.”
So what started as a family hobby quickly turned into a passion for Wright, which he hopes can help grow the sport.
Wright will continue to compete in disc golf tournaments before heading to Kansas for Junior Worlds, where he’s excited for the opportunity to represent the Wiregrass on the big stage.
