Donations made on United Way Wednesday will be matched up to $150,000
Wiregrass United Way seeks donations as final days of this year’s campaign near
DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) - Today is United Way Wednesday, a big push by the Wiregrass United way to reach their annual goal in the final days of this year’s campaign.
Fundraising has been difficult due to the pandemic. Traditionally, the organization could go inside companies to raise money, but due to COVID-19 the companies had to do the fundraising for them. This has led to numbers being down compared to years past.
However, that could turn around today. There are $150,000 in matching funds at stake. Walter Hill, Wiregrass United Way CEO, is hoping to turn $150,000 to $300,000 today through donations.
Hill says it take thousands of people coming together to make the campaigning successful. Funds raised will stay local within the 38 organizations that help people in six Wiregrass counties.
Hill is appreciative of each donation, no matter how big or small. He said Wiregrass United Way needs these donations to be able continue to help people throughout this year.
“Some people think, ‘Well I can only give $25, I won’t give,’ or ‘I can only give $100, I won’t give, that won’t help them get to $150,000,’ but it really does because people across six counties are giving,” Hill said. “So I’m just overcome with emotion from people’s generosity. People want to help their neighbors and out neighbors are not just the people that live on either side of our house, our neighbors are people around out community.”
