WASHINGTON D.C. (WALB) - U.S. House Rep. Sanford Bishop is calling on Vice President Mike Pence to envoke the 25th Amendment and take over as president until President-elect Joe Biden and his administration take office on Jan. 20.

In a press release, Bishop said he wasn’t prepared for what took place Wednesday at the U.S. Capitol.

“Yesterday I was prepared to stand up and speak out against my fellow members of Congress and senators in their attempt to overturn the legitimate election of Joe Biden as president. I was not prepared for violent rioters to break into the Capitol, encouraged by President Trump,” the statement from Congressman Bishop reads.

This comes the day after protesters forced their way into the Capitol building and halted the certification of the electoral votes, which certified Biden as the next president.

“Let me be clear, every single action (Wednesday) that was taken in an attempt to overturn this election was an act of sedition. The actions of elected officials, including President Trump, who have repeatedly lied to their supporters to keep power led us to this horrific moment in American history. This must be a turning point for our nation. Enough is enough,” said Bishop.

During the attack in Washington D.C., senators and congressmen were moved from the Senate and the House during proceedings, moved to safer locations and some even hiding under their desks.

“Thankfully, the will of the people was not impeded, only delayed. After the attack on the Capitol, we went back in and performed our Constitutional duty — certifying the electors who chose Joe Biden and Kamala Harris to lead us for the next four years. However, if we do not handle this now, it will get worse. I am calling on Vice President Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment for the safety of this nation and the integrity of our democracy,” said Bishop.

Just before 4 a.m. Thursday, Congress had officially certified Biden as the 46th president of the United States.

During the certification process, multiple congressmen mentioned the 25th Amendment, claiming Trump could do harm to the country with what time he has left in office.
