Volunteers prepare to deliver hundreds of meals through Troy Turkeys From Heaven
TROY, Ala. (WTVY) - Some Pike County volunteers are trying to make the Christmas holidays special for families in need.
Dozens of volunteers are preparing to cook and deliver meals to hundreds of families through the Troy “Turkeys From Heaven” program.
Families that will receive the meals are referred to by DHR, churches, and food banks. They will receive a smoked turkey, sides, and desserts sent straight to their door.
This year’s event is Tuesday, December 22nd, with volunteers going to the Pike County Cattlemen’s Association building.
Organizers say for safety reasons, this year will look at bit different..
“We’re having to tweak it a little bit of what we do,” founder Kelly Sanders said. “We normally assemble green bean casserole and send it out. But this year to limit exposure, we’re going to pack the ingredients and send it with the meal and have them mix it themselves. We also have several organizations that usually prepare desserts, but this year we are asking for pre-packaged desserts.”
“I think it’s really important this year because there’s so many people that have needs, whether its directly related to COVID, or whether they’ve had it or a family members had it,” volunteer Marcus Paramore said.
Volunteers are needed to help. Monday, December 21st, is a set up day. Volunteers are asked to come around noon to set up tables. Men are asked to bring their grills.
On Tuesday, grillers are arriving around 5 A.M. If you want to volunteer, you can get to the Pike County Cattlemens Association around 10 A.M. to help deliver.
If you would like to help in other ways, you can go to Piggly Wiggly stores in Troy and purchase a turkey for $15.
