DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) - Blood banks are encouraging you to give the gift of life this holiday season.

According to Lifesouth Community Blood Centers, blood donations are in an emergency stage. That means there are less than one day’s supply in stock. Hospitals in need of blood depend on these centers to help their patients.

Schools and churches typically hold blood drives this time of year, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, most have been canceled.

Regional Manager of Dothan’s Lifesouth Rebecca Hughes says you do not have to have an appointment to donate.

O-positive, O-negative, and B-positive blood types are desperately needed, but all blood types are welcomed.

“There’s no way to make artificial blood,” Hughes said. “You have to give it. It’s the cheapest gift you can give this holiday season. You can give back. You don’t have to go spend money or worry about anything like that. You can literally just come in and give someone the gift of life.”

Lifesouth is currently open 7 days a week.
