DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) - Thousands of meals were given out to people Sunday afternoon, all in the spirit of giving.

Former mayor and current businessman Mike Schmitz says he got the idea after a recent health issue. After making a recovery, he decided to he wanted to give back.

Schmitz organized the food giveaway. About 4,000 meals were passed out to residents and medical personnel throughout Dothan and at Southeast Health. Sixteen food trucks and vendors took part in the event, handing out barbecue, hamburgers, chicken legs, and a variety of other items.

The event took place from 1 p.m to 5 p.m Sunday afternoon at various locations across Dothan.
