DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) - Many airports across the country are seeing large amounts of travelers for the Thanksgiving week holiday.

We wanted to check in with our local airport to see how they’re preparing for the holiday season. While travel-- overall-- is expected to be down this year during Thanksgiving due to the pandemic, Director of Marketing Lauren Beauchamp said the airport is expecting a busy week.

“In preparing for the holiday season, we have upped the commercial flights we have flying through Dothan Regional Airport,” Beauchamp said.

That means there are now four departure flights, just in time for the holidays.

“The flights around the middle of the day are being a little bit busier, we are filling up each of our flights,” Beauchamp said.

To keep the COVID-19 restrictions, like social distancing in place, the middle seats inside the aircrafts are blocked off.

Travelers are being encouraged to follow all CDC and TSA guidelines to ensure safe arrivals and departures.

“Make sure you bring masks, hand sanitizer, you know to protect yourself and others around you,” Beauchamp said. “When you’re coming through TSA, I know it’s Thanksgiving .You might want to bring home some dishes or your grandmother’s cranberry sauce, but make sure we are all applying TSA regulations and abiding by them.”

The airport is landscaping to make the airport more inviting. It’s improving its customer safety with some help from the City of Dothan.

“We have also put in news LED lights for our entry way for customer safety, so whenever they’re coming into our airport, the path is well lit,” Beauchamp said.

Earlier in 2020, the airport had discussed adding a fifth flight to its arrivals and departures. The pandemic hindered those plans.

Airport Director Adam Hartzog said they’re hopeful that fifth flight could be added next summer or when passenger numbers are back at 100%.

While health officials are not encouraging traveling for Thanksgiving, the CDC says if you are traveling, make sure to check your the local and state restrictions that may be in place at your destination.

Incoming flights arrive at Dothan Regional at 9:30 am, 1:10 pm, 4:25 pm, and 8:39 pm.

The departure flights leave at 7am, 10:43 am, 1:55 pm and 5:15 pm.
