DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) -A local church gave away 10,000 pounds of groceries to those in need of a helping hand this holiday season.

New Smyrna Assembly of God Church in Bonifay and its outreach group Heart for Holmes host 5,000-pound food giveaways semi-monthly.

Today’s distribution was doubled and so will the next two.

That change came after the Holmes County Board of County Commissioners saw the demand at previous events.

The food is purchased using funds from the CARES Act.

Organizers say the events would not be as successful without the help of volunteers.

“It’s vitally important I think even so much more during all of the stuff that’s going on in the community with the virus and things a lot of people are financially stressed out and stressed financially so it gives us a chance to ease that burdensome,” says New Smyrna Assembly of God pastor John Richbourg.

The next food distribution is December 4th from 9-11 a.m. at the church.
