DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) -Covid-19 is changing how we celebrate the holidays, but it’s not stopping organizations from spreading the holiday cheer.

Two thousand people gathered at Wiregrass park last year for the Community Christmas Luncheon.

To keep everyone safe, it will be a drive-thru style event at Rip Hewes stadium.

For the first time in the event’s 17-year history, there won’t be a hot meal served, but participants will still receive a brown bag of groceries and a blanket or heater.

Organizer Anita Dawkins thanks the City of Dothan, Wiregrass Rehabilitation Center, and Wiregrass Food Services for helping to make it possible.

It was important for Dawkins to put the event on even though it meant doing it a lot differently.

“This year is going to be a very trying time for our community because of the pandemic. A lot of people are limited to resources, limited to driving, the restrictions and a lot of them just don’t have it and that’s what we do it for,” says Dawkins.

The drive-thru will be on December 18th from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. or when supplies run out.

The event is open to the public and you don’t need to register or RSVP.
