Shute Pecan Company starts buying season
Pecan season is underway and Shute’s is starting to buy pecans from sellers.
DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) - Today is opening day for pecan season at Shute Pecan Company. Cars were lined up with buckets, bags, and tubs full of pecans ready for sale.
However, the buying prices are lower this season. Seedlings are being bought at 40 cents a pound and Elliots are 70 cents a pound.
Owner Sandi Hodge said that can change at any point, but as of Oct. 28, that is what they were running.
They are not taking Stuarts at this time
Hodge explains why the prices are so low this season.
“There is an abundance of pecans left from last year’s crop," Hodge said. "So the handlers are being extra particular you know they are picking and choosing what they want to buy, so it’s got to be really good quality but the prices are cheap.”
Sellers must bring their pecans clean and ready to buy.
