DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) - National prescription drug take back day is Oct. 24, so now would be a good time to clean out your medicine cabinet.

It is important to avoid throwing expired, unused, or no longer needed medications in your trash can at home. They need to be disposed of properly.

SpectraCare Health Systems is partnering with the Houston County Sheriff’s department and Walmart Supercenter for the “prescription drug take back event.”

This gives locals the opportunity to dispose of their no longer needed prescription drugs the right way. This event will be held tomorrow, Oct. 24, prevention specialist Marlene Lassiter shares why the event is so important.

“It helps protect our citizens from overdose, also children from poisoning from prescription medications," Lassiter said. "It also helps our environment to dispose of our meds properly.”

SpectraCare will be outside of the Walmart Supercenter on South Oates street tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
